Do I need to pay for an SSL certificate?

Updated Hostnali team

Short answer

Most websites don't. Every Hostnali hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate that installs and renews automatically, which is enough for business websites, blogs and most online shops. Pay for a certificate when you need company validation (OV or EV), a warranty, or a wildcard for many subdomains.

The free SSL included with hosting

  • Installed automatically when your domain points to your hosting.
  • Renews by itself, so it never expires.
  • Covers your domain and www, plus subdomains you add in cPanel.
  • Uses the same encryption strength as paid certificates.

When a paid certificate is worth it

  • Company validation: OV and EV certificates show your organisation’s verified name in the certificate details, which some clients, tenders and partners ask for.
  • Warranty: paid certificates come with a warranty from the certificate authority.
  • Wildcard: one certificate for every subdomain, useful when you run many.
  • Servers outside cPanel: some systems and devices need a certificate you install yourself.

How long does a paid certificate take?

  • DV: usually minutes.
  • OV: usually 1–3 working days, while the company details are checked.
  • EV: usually 1–5 working days.

Our team helps you install it. See all SSL certificates with live prices, from Ksh 2,500 a year, or read what an SSL certificate is.
