How to transfer your domain in four steps

  1. Unlock your domain

    Log in at your current registrar and turn off the registrar lock.

  2. Get the EPP code

    Copy the EPP (authorisation) code your current registrar gives you.

  3. Start the transfer here

    Enter your domain above, add the EPP code at checkout and pay with M-Pesa, card or bank transfer.

  4. Approve and relax

    Approve the transfer email if one arrives. We email you as soon as the domain is with Hostnali.

Before you transfer: a quick checklist

Unlock the domain

Turn off the registrar lock (also called transfer lock) at your current registrar.

Get the EPP code

Ask your current registrar for the EPP or authorisation code. It’s like a password for the transfer.

Check the contact email

Approval emails go to the domain’s registered contact, so make sure it’s an address you can read.

Mind the 60-day rule

Global domains such as .com can’t move within 60 days of being registered or transferred.

Renew it first if it’s about to expire

A domain that expires in the next few days is safer renewed before you transfer.

Will my website and email keep working?

Yes. A transfer changes who registers your domain, not where it points. Your nameservers and DNS records stay the same, so your website and email keep working throughout.

Once the transfer is complete, you can keep your current DNS, or move your website and email to Hostnali as well. If you do, we migrate them for free.

Domain transfer FAQ

How much does a domain transfer cost in Kenya?

It depends on the extension: a .co.ke transfer costs Ksh 1,300 and a .com transfer Ksh 2,100. The table above lists every extension.

How long does a domain transfer take?

.ke domains (.co.ke, .ke, .or.ke and the rest) transfer instantly. International domains such as .com, .net and .org take 5–7 days, while the current registrar confirms the move.

What is an EPP code?

A secret code from your current registrar that proves you own the domain and authorises the transfer. It’s also called an authorisation or auth code.

Will my website go offline during the transfer?

No. The transfer doesn’t change your nameservers or DNS records, so your website and email keep working the whole time.

Can I transfer a domain I registered recently?

Global domains such as .com can’t be transferred within 60 days of being registered or last transferred. Local extensions have their own rules; our team will check yours.

Does a transfer extend my registration?

When the transfer has a fee, yes: it adds a year to the expiry date, and you keep the time already paid for. Where the transfer is free (a transfer price of zero, such as .ke), the domain moves with its current expiry date and no year is added.
