What is an EPP code and where do I find it?

Updated Hostnali team

Short answer

An EPP code (also called an authorisation or auth code) is a password for your domain. The new registrar needs it to prove the domain owner agreed to the transfer. You get it from your current registrar, usually in its dashboard or by email.

Every domain has a secret EPP code, a mix of letters, numbers and symbols such as xK9#p2Lq!m. Without it, nobody can move your domain to another registrar, which protects you from someone stealing it.

Where to find it

  • In your registrar’s dashboard: look for “Get EPP code”, “Authorisation code” or “Transfer domain” next to the domain.
  • By email: some registrars only send it to the domain’s registered email address.
  • From your web designer: if they registered the domain for you, ask them for the code, and ask them to put the domain in your name.

If you can’t find it, contact your current registrar’s support. They have to give the code to the domain’s owner.

Using it

Enter the code when you order the transfer on our domain transfer page. Copy and paste it rather than typing it: codes are case-sensitive.

Keep it safe

Treat the EPP code like a password. Don’t post it publicly or send it to anyone you don’t trust; with the code, a domain can be moved away from you. After a transfer, a new code is created.
